What Makes a Great Hospital Interior? Lessons from Three Nepali Healthcare Projects

A great hospital interior does two jobs at once: it keeps clinical operations efficient, and it keeps patients calm. In practice that means clear zoning between public, clinical and support areas, intuitive circulation that never makes a visitor guess, hygienic and durable materials, and lighting that reassures rather than glares. Kala has delivered this balance across three healthcare projects in Nepal — Manipal Hospital and BNB Hospital in Pokhara, and National Path Lab in Lalitpur.

Why is circulation the first design decision?

In a hospital, wayfinding failure is operational failure. Patients, visitors, staff and supplies move on different paths, and the interior must separate them without signage doing all the work. At Manipal Hospital, spatial planning and functional zoning were designed before a single finish was chosen.

How do materials differ from other commercial interiors?

Every surface must be cleanable, seam-minimal and durable under 24-hour use — while still feeling humane. At BNB Hospital, wards, operation theatres, nurse stations and reception areas each carry a calm colour palette and clean finishes tuned to both hygiene protocols and patient comfort.

What did a diagnostic lab teach us about small healthcare spaces?

At National Path Lab, the challenge was compression: reception, sampling, laboratory and waiting functions in a compact footprint, with a strict divide between public and working zones. The answer was disciplined spatial organisation and a restrained interior language that reads as professional the moment you enter.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a hospital interior fit-out take?

Depending on scale and whether the facility stays operational during works, from a few months for a lab or clinic to a phased year-plus programme for a full hospital.

Can a hospital stay open during renovation?

Yes, with phased execution — zones are isolated, works are sequenced around clinical schedules, and dust and noise control are engineered into the programme.

Does Kala handle medical-specific requirements?

Yes — our healthcare portfolio spans hospitals, labs and clinics, with the hospital-specific requirements those demand. Talk to us about your facility.
